Since 1998, our not-for-profit program has served all seniors, age 60 and over, who live in McHenry County or Sun City Huntley. Our mission is to help seniors maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life by remaining in their own homes or the home of a loved one for as long as possible.
Volunteers help us achieve our mission by providing services such as transportation to life-sustaining as well as life-enriching destinations, friendly visits, minor home repairs, yard work and short-term respite care all at absolutely no charge to the senior.
In our last fiscal year, volunteers drove more than 160,000 miles, and dedicated 14,000 volunteer hours to assist more than 1200 local seniors. Our services saved seniors and their families $400,000.
When a senior is unable to attend necessary medical appointments due to lack of transportation services, our services can be life-critical. However, our other services, such as our friendly visits, help seniors feel less isolated and decrease feelings of anxiety and depression. When they know there is someone there for them, someone who cares, and they know they can still be an integral part of their community, they remain independent longer.
There is concern about the growing senior population both nationally and in our community. In 2011, 10,000 baby boomers a day started turning 65. McHenry County has the fourth fastest growing senior population in the entire state and research indicates that our county senior population will increase 157% by 2030. Please consider volunteering with us; an hour of your time is all it takes to make a real difference in the life of a senior who needs you!
