Medical equipment loan closet fills void for McHenry County seniors

SCVN Volunteer Cindy Holliday organizes the Medical equipment loan closet

For some of McHenry County’s older adults, trying to find the funds to purchase needed medical equipment such as a wheelchair, walker, or bedside commode following a surgery or illness can be a daunting task.

That’s where Senior Care Volunteer Network and its Durable Medical Equipment Loan Closet comes in.

“We often hear that our DME Loan Closet is a lifesaver,” Outreach Director Laura Turasky said. “When an emergency or urgent surgery is needed and there’s very little time to prepare, families find comfort in knowing that SCVN is a resource for rehab equipment needs.”

The SCVN Durable Medical Equipment Loan Closet is the largest of its kind in McHenry County, and 515 senior clients aged 60 and over were able to benefit from it in the last fiscal year. Some of the most commonly loaned and donated items include: wheelchairs, walkers, rolling walkers, bedside commodes, shower chairs or benches, transport chairs, bed rails, canes and knee walkers.
